INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of this page is to collect information about significant events in the Middle East.  Over time, I have grown weary of the constant finger pointing between the Arabs and the Jews.  I have decided to document significant events in an attempt to clarify why we have the current state of conflict when prior to 1948 we did not.

Middle East Map

Genesis

During the life of Abraham

Genesis 17:1-8 - The Abrahamic covenant.

  • Abraham will be the father of many nations (not just one).
  • This covenant is between Abraham and his seed after him (no specifics about Israel at this time).
  • All the land of Canaan will be an everlasting possession for Abraham and his seed after him. (This is interesting as the house of Israel and the house of Judah were driven from the land by YHWH for a time.)

Exodus

During the life of Moses

Exodus 19:5 - The land belongs to YHWH.

  • All the land belongs to YHWH.
  • This is a conditional promise given to Moses for the children of Israel predicated on the premiss of obeying the voice of YHWH and keeping the covenant of YHWH.

Leviticus

During the life of Moses

Leviticus 19:33 - Do not oppress strangers in the land.

Leviticus 20:22 - The land will vomit you out if you disobey.

Leviticus 25:23 - The land belongs to YHWH.

Leviticus 26:40-46 - The chapter contains instructions and restrictions for living in the land.

  • Conditions for return to the land.
  • I do not see how the people who call themselves Jews or Israel have met these requirements.
  • This chapter also states the penalties for breaking covenant with YHWH.
  • Since ALL of these curses have come to pass, it is certain that the children of Israel broke covenant with YHWH.  I have yet to see where the children of Israel have been restored to covenant relationship with YHWH.

Numbers

During the life of Moses

Numbers 33:51-56 - YHWH prophesies that HE will drive HIS people out of the land one day.

  • Verse 56 - This is a very important statement as it means that he will, one day, drive them out of the land which HE did.  I have yet to find a reference in Scripture that states that the Hebrews or Israelites are supposed to return to the land and drive out the inhabitants that live there.

Numbers 34:2-15 - Border definition.

Deuteronomy

During the life of Moses

Deuteronomy 10:14 - The earth and all that is in it belongs to YHWH.

Deuteronomy 11:24 - Border definition.

Deuteronomy 28:63 - Banishment from the land.

Joshua

During the life of Joshua

Joshua 1:4 - Border definition.

Joshua 11:22-23 - Excluded cities.

  • Cities the Hebrews did not conquor.
  • While this chapter states the land Joshua took, according to the word of YHWH, it limits some of the alleged borders.

Joshua 12:6 - Land allocation east of the Jordan river.

Jeremiah

During the life of Jeremiah

Jeremiah 16:18 - YHWH states that the land is HIS.

  • YHWH states that the land is HIS.
  • YHWH states that the inheritance is HIS.  This is huge as this would mean that during Jubilee, the land always reverts back to HIM.

Jeremiah 17:4 - The people are prophesied to let go of the inheritance YHWH gave them.

Jeremiah 19:3-5 - YHWH details the peoples sins against HIM and why HE is exiling them from the land.

Jeremiah 27:22 - The prophesy of Babylonian exile.

  • YHWH states that the people will remain in exile until HE visits them.  This is a very important chapter depending on how it is interpreted.

Jeremiah 30:3 - This verse speaks of Israel AND Judah.

  • This is a very important verse since originally the Jews claimed that they were descendant of the house of Judah which would mean that only the house of Judah was returning.  Today, they have changed their claim to include both houses of Jacob.

Ezekiel

593/2 to 562 B.C.

During the life of Ezekiel

Ezekiel 36:1 - This entire chapter needs to be studied.

Ezekiel 47:15-20 - Border definition.

I have paused from referencing the book of Ezekiel.  There are many more references from that book to be added here ASAP.

The Damascus Protocol

"The Damascus Protocol was a document given to Faisal bin Hussein by the Arab secret societies al-Fatat and Al-'Ahd on his second visit to Damascus during a mission to consult Turkish officials in Constantinople (1914). The secret societies declared they would support Faisal's father Hussein bin Ali's revolt against the Ottoman Empire, if the demands in the protocol were submitted to the British. These demands, defining the territory of an independent Arab state to be established in the Middle East that would encompass all of the lands of western Asia, then became the basis of the conversation in the Hussein-McMahon Correspondence."

The Hussein-McMahon correspondence

In an exchange of ten letters between Sir Henry McMahon, Britain’s high commissioner in Egypt, and Sharif Hussein bin Ali, Emir of Mecca and King of the Arabs (and great, great grandfather of King Abdullah of modern-day Jordan), Britain pledged to support Arab independence if Hussein’s forces revolted against the Ottomans."

"The exchange of letters became known as the Hussein-McMahon correspondence. Hussein envisioned a unified Arab state stretching from Aleppo (Syria) to Aden (Yemen)."

The Balfour Declaration

Arabs constituted about 90 percent of the population of Palestine at the time of the Balfour Declaration, but as Lord Balfour explained, "Zionism, be it right or wrong, good, or bad, is rooted in age-long tradition, in present needs, in future hopes, of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land." Quoted in Christopher Sykes, Crossroads to Israel (London: William Collins, 1965).

A fact often ignored is that the Jewish inhabitants of Palestine at the time by no means generally supported the Zionist program, a fact that bears on the justification for these policies based on the persistence of Jewish settlement in Palestine, specifically, Jerusalem. I know of no careful study of their attitudes, but whatever the breakdown may have been, the threat to Zionist goals was clear and was disturbing to the early settlers. We can learn something about this from the official history of the Haganah ("self-defense" forces), the military arm of the Jewish community (Toldot Habaganab, vol. 2, Ma'arachot Publishing House, pp. 251f., a section on "special activities"). The section concerns a Dutch Jewish poet, Dr. Israel Jacob de Haan, who came to Israel and became involved with the Orthodox Jewish community (the "old Yishuv," the pre-Zionist Jewish settlement). He began to organize them in anti- Zionist political activities and "to construct a united front of the old Yishuv with the Arab Higher Committee against the new Yishuv and the Zionist enterprise." His activities took on a "pathological character" when, together with Rabbi Sonnenfeld, he proclaimed "the opposition of native-born Jews to Zionism" (the pathological character of his activities was further revealed, the official history states, by his homosexuality). The Central Bureau of Haganah gave an order "to remove the traitor from the land of the living," and he was duly assassinated by two Haganah agents, recent immigrants from Russia, "as he left the small synagogue in the 'Shaarey Tsedek' hospital" on June 30, 1924.

The section concludes with a description of another "special action," the placing of a bomb in the house of an Arab leader who lived near the Wailing Wall where Arab youths were alleged to have been disturbing Jews at prayer (summer 1927).

Contrary to the impression often conveyed by the American literature, terrorism has not been a monopoly of the PLO.

Britain wins control over the area of Palestine from the Ottoman Empire.

As a result of World War I, Britain wins control over the area of Palestine from the Ottoman Empire. The area becomes known as British-mandate Palestine. [A mandate is an authorization to govern over conquered territory]. From 1918 to 1948, Britain governs over the Jews and Arabs living in this territory.

British Mandate of Palestine

"Inaugurated in 1920 and ending in 1947, the British Mandate for Palestine was the product of 1) British political ambitions to replace the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East, 2) Britain's promises of colonial control to the French in the region, and 3) conflicting British promises of self-determination to the Arabs and Jewish statehood for Zionists. The British ruled Palestine under the League of Nations Mandate which followed Britain's Balfour Declaration of 1917, whose unilateral principle was "the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people," in Biblical Palestine.""

Battle of Tel Hai

"The Battle of Tel Hai was fought in March 1920 during the Franco-Syrian War between Arab irregulars under the banner of the Arab Kingdom of Syria and Jewish defensive paramilitary force, protecting the village of Tel Hai in Northern Galilee. In the course of the event, a Shiite Arab militia, accompanied by Bedouin from a nearby village, attacked the Jewish agricultural locality of Tel Hai. In the aftermath of the battle eight Jews and five Arabs were killed. Joseph Trumpeldor, the commander of Jewish defenders of Tel Hai, was shot in the hand and stomach, and died while being evacuated to Kfar Giladi that evening. Tel Hai was eventually abandoned by the Jews and burned by the Arab militia."

"The event is perceived by some scholars as the first significant outbreak of violence, eventually leading to the Arab–Israeli conflict three decades later."

The rioting began in Jaffa and spread to other parts of the country. The riot resulted in the deaths of 47 Jews and 48 Arabs. 146 Jews and 73 Arabs were wounded."

White Paper (a.k.a. The MacDonald White Paper)

There was an abortive political effort to achieve self-governing institutions in Palestine in the face of British and Zionist opposition, and the growing opposition to Jewish immigration, leading to general strike and rebellion when it had become obvious that there was "no real chance of effecting any significant change in the British policy in Palestine through peaceful means" and that Palestinian Arabs were destined to "become a minority community of no significance in the country where they had constituted the overwhelming majority".

The White Paper of 1939, also known as the MacDonald White Paper after Malcolm MacDonald, the British Colonial Secretary who presided over it, was a policy paper issued by the British government under Neville Chamberlain in which the idea of partitioning the Mandate for Palestine, as recommended in the Peel Commission Report of 1937, was abandoned in favour of creating an independent Palestine governed by Palestinian Arabs and Jews in proportion to their numbers in the population by 1939.

Spring, 1943

Jewish ghetto residents stage an armed uprising against the Nazi occupation.

It is spring 1943 and the residents of the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw are staging an armed uprising against the Nazi occupation. For four years, more than 400,000 Jews had been confined to an area of about one square mile, sealed off by walls, barbed wire and constant military surveillance. Anyone trying to escape was shot on sight. Just as the Israeli government’s blockade of the Gaza Strip controls what goes in and out, including Gazans’ daily calorie intake, the Nazis also maintained total control over what went into the Warsaw ghetto. Food was in short supply. Disease and starvation killed thousands every month.

Faced with the prospect of forced deportation to concentration camps, several Jewish resistance groups created two armed units, the Jewish Combat Organisation and the Jewish Military Union. At the time of the uprising, the total number of fighters was around 800. At some point, they established contact with the Polish Home Army and obtained guns and explosives. As well as these weapons, the Jews fought their oppressor with third-rate rifles, homemade grenades and Molotov cocktails.

As the Nazis began to destroy the ghetto – like Gaza, a densely populated civilian area – it was discovered that the fighters had stored their munitions in synagogues, private houses and underground tunnels. In fact, it was also discovered that residents of the ghetto had constructed underground bunkers in preparation for the uprising. So, when the Nazis entered the ghetto on 19 April 1943, the eve of Passover, with the intention of liquidating the inhabitants, they found it empty: everyone was hiding in the bunkers and tunnels.

During this time, the fighters issued the following manifesto to the people of Poland: ‘Long live the fraternity of blood and weapons in a fighting Poland! Long live freedom! Death to the hangman and the killer! We must continue our mutual struggle against the occupier until the very end.’ It took the Nazis almost a month to break the resistance. Just as Netanyahu boasts of the destruction of ‘terror tunnels’, SS general Jürgen Stroop reported that his forces had destroyed over 600 bunkers. For months after the ghetto’s liquidation, Jewish groups remained in hiding and continued to fight the Nazis. They weren’t about to relinquish their memories of homeland.

What would you say to Mordecai Anielewicz, who commanded the Jewish Combat Organisation? Would you be able to hold his gaze and call him a terrorist? Would you accuse him of using human shields because he hid his arsenal in people’s homes? Would you say that the destruction of the Great Synagogue on Tlomackie Street, one of the wonders of nineteenth century Polish architecture, was a legitimate target? Of course, your answer is no because, according to the logic of your Zionist posturing, the infinite humanity of the Warsaw Jews is matched only by the abject inhumanity of Palestinians. So, while the former had every right to resist oppression by any means necessary, for the latter group – whom Zionism has stripped of their homeland and subsequently their place in history – even the possession of the most mediocre of weapons justifies brutal retaliation by their occupier.

Lord Moyne assassinated by the Israelis

November 1944 assassination of Lord Moyne, Leader of the House of Lords, Secretary of State for the Colonies, Resident Minister in Cairo

"The standard interpretation is so familiar that it is perhaps superfluous to document it. The most interesting examples, in my opinion, are those produced in left-liberal circles. See, for example, Michael Walzer, "The New Terrorists," New Republic August 30, 1975. He considers the evolution in patterns of terrorism in the past generation. The "new terrorists," such as the PLO, are "thugs and fanatics" who murder at random, whereas in the good old days terrorism was a political weapon (which of course we deplore) directed to specific targets, as when the Zionist Stern Gang killed Lord Moyne in 1944, taking pains not to shoot the Egyptian constable who apprehended them. Walzer might have added that, as in the cases discussed earlier, the killers are honored in Israel; in this case, one of the commanders of the operation is speaker of the Knesset, while "the Israeli Ministry of Education and Culture published a special booklet to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the execution" of the two patriots who killed Lord Moyne (Al Hamishmar, April 4, 1975).

The four cars stopped in front of the cafe house and out stepped men dressed in khaki uniforms and steel helmets. However, it soon became apparent that they had not come to protect the villagers. With machine guns they sprayed bullets into the crowd gathered in the coffee house. Some of the invaders placed bombs next to Arab homes while other disguised terrorists tossed grenades at civilians. For a while it seemed as if the villagers would be annihilated but soon a real British patrol arrived to foil the well organized killing raid. The death toll of 7 Arab civilians could have been much higher."

HAIFA OIL REFINERY MASSACRE: (December 30, 1947)

The Haifa Oil Refinery massacre took place on 30 December 1947.  After members of the Zionist paramilitary organisation, the Irgun, threw a number of grenades at a crowd of 100 Arab day-labourers who had gathered outside the main gate of the then British-owned Haifa Oil Refinery looking for work, six people were killed and 42 wounded.  Minutes after this attack, Arab refinery workers and others began attacking the Jewish refinery workers, resulting in 39 deaths and 49 injuries, before British army and Palestine Police units arrived to put an end to the violence.  Haganah later retaliated by attacking two nearby Arab villages in what became known as the Balad al-Shaykh Massacre, where between 21 and 70 Arabs were killed, while skirmishes followed in Haifa.

For a description of the massacre in the Lebanese village of Hula for which Lahis was responsible as perceived by the victims, see Rosemary Sayigh, From Peasants to Revolutionaries (London: Zed Press, 1979), a study based on interviews with Palestinian refugees. She reports, for example, the case of a young Lebanese boy who later joined the Palestinian resistance; his family fled their village "because the Zionists carried out a massacre in Hula, a village near ours," he informed her. If he takes part in a terrorist attack leading to an Israeli bombing of a village, the press will denounce this unprovoked act of Arab terrorism followed by an unfortunate (but understandable) Israeli reprisal.

The Yazur Massacre

Yigael Yadin, a Haganah commander, ordered the Palmach commander, Yigal Allon, to carry out an operation against the village of Yazur. A group from the Palmach attacked a bus near Yazur, wounding the bus driver a several Arab passengers. On the same day, another group attacked another bus killing and wounding several people. These attacks by the Palmach and Givati Brigades on Arab villages and cars continued for 20 consecutive days while other units detonated bombs near village homes.

Then the Haganah authorities decided to attack the village and bomb the ice factory along with two buildings around it. A Haganah group opened fire on the ice factory in the village, while other groups opened fire and used hand grenades on the homes in the village. Moreover, an engineering group bombed the Askandroni building, the ice factory, and killed 15 people.

THE KFAR ETZION MASSACRE:

The Kfar Etzion massacre refers to a massacre that took place after a two-day battle between Jewish settlers and soldiers of Kibbutz Kfar Etzion and a combined force of the Arab Legion and Arab villagers, on May 13, 1948, the day before the Israeli Declaration of Independence. Of the 129 Haganah soldiers and Jewish combatant kibbutzniks who died during the defence of the settlement, Martin Gilbert states that fifteen were murdered on surrendering.

Kfar Etzion massacre  (HTTPS://EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG) (2014/0817)

The official Israeli version maintains that the settlers and soldiers were massacred by villagers and the Arab Legion as they were surrendering. The Arab Legion version states that it arrived too late to prevent the villagers' onslaught, which was motivated by a desire to revenge the massacre of Deir Yassin, and the destruction of one of their villages several months earlier.

ISRAELIS TAKE THE VILLIAGE OF NAJD:

Long before Israel was created, there were Najd and Huj, two Palestinian villages located fifteen and fourteen kilometres north-east of present-day Gaza City. On 13 May 1948, soldiers from the Israeli Negev Brigade’s 7th Battalion arrived in Najd, expelled the inhabitants to Gaza, and then looted and destroyed their houses. On 31 May 1948, Huj suffered the same fate; its inhabitants, too, expelled to Gaza. Four years later, the city of Sderot was founded on the site of these villages and populated by newly-arrived Moroccan, Kurdish, and Iranian Jews. More recently, their numbers have been swelled by Jewish immigrants from Romania and Russia.

As such, 1948 is directly connected to the rockets landing today on Sderot, this city built to erase hundreds of years of non-Jewish history. Try as they might to escape it, this year of rupture will always torment Sderot’s present inhabitants. They know – how can they not? – those rockets come from the children of the very people they displaced and then pretended had never existed. They also know that the children of Huj and Najd, whom you dismiss as ‘terrorists’, will always remember where their ancestors’ bones lie buried. Their memories of their homeland remain entrenched and immediate. As such, they will never relinquish them. And, indeed, why should they?

Hundreds of thousands of Arabs expelled from Palestine.

"The public and propaganda pretense is that the Arabs fled, expecting to return after the victory of Arab armies. In internal records, the pretense is abandoned. See, e.g., the discussion in Sharett's diaries of the cabinet meetings of March 1955 discussing Ben-Gurion's proposal to attack the Gaza Strip, then held by Egypt, and to disperse its inhabitants. In Sharett's words: "The first round would be: Israel aggressively invades the Gaza Strip. The second: Israel causes again the terrified flight of masses of Arab refugees." Sharett opposed this proposal, believing that "what we succeeded in achieving . . . in 1948, cannot be repeated whenever we desire it." For lengthy quotes, see Rokach, Israel's Sacred Terrorism."

The incident occurred after the town was captured by the IDF's 89th Commando Battalion during Operation Yoav. Israeli Terrorism

Israeli terrorists are reported to have carried out similar acts in Iraq in 1949, under instructions from Yigal Allon, a leading representative of the kibbutz movement: "In attempts to portray the Iraqis as anti-American and to terrorize the Jews, the Zionists planted bombs in the U.S. Information Service library and in synagogues. Soon leaflets began to appear urging Jews to flee to Israel" (Wilbur Crane Eveland, Ropes of Sand [New York: Norton, 1980], p. 48). Eveland, who was the military attache of the U.S. embassy in Baghdad and later worked for the CIA in the Middle East as well as serving on the White House and Pentagon policy planning staffs, adds that "although the Iraqi police later provided our embassy with evidence to show that the synagogue and library bombings as well as the anti-Jewish and anti-American leaflet campaigns had been the work of an underground Zionist organization, most of the world believed reports that Arab terrorism had motivated the flight of the Iraqi Jews whom the Zionists had 'rescued' really just in order to increase Israel's Jewish population." Iraqi Jews in Israel have testified to the same effect (cf. Uri Davis and Norton Mezvinsky, Documents from Israel [London: Ithaca Press, 1975]), but their reports received little notice. It will be a long time, no doubt, before a serious account of all of this enters the general or academic literature on Israel.

See Livia Rokach, Le Monde diplomatique (April 1978).

The man in charge of the Israeli terrorist group in Egypt, which bombed U.S. and British installations (as well as public buildings) in an attempt to create hostility between the United States and Nasser, describes these activities in a personal memoir: Avni el-Ad, Decline of Honor (Chicago: Regnery, 1976).

"The Qibya massacre, also known as the Qibya incident, was an operation that occurred in October 1953 when Israeli troops under Ariel Sharon attacked the village of Qibya in the West Bank. At least sixty-nine Palestinian Arab villagers, two-thirds of them women and children, were killed. Forty-five houses, a school, and a mosque were destroyed. The act was condemned by the U.S. State Department, the UN Security Council, and by Jewish communities worldwide. The State Department described the raid as "shocking", and used the occasion to confirm publicly that economic aid to Israel had been suspended previously, for other non-compliance regarding the 1949 Armistice Agreements. The operation was codenamed Operation Shoshana by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). It was carried out by two Israeli units at night: a paratroop company and Unit 101, a special forces unit of the IDF."

Prime Minister Sharett's personal diaries constitute another historical source that is likely to be consigned to oblivion. For informative excerpts and analysis, see Rokach, Israel's Sacred Terrorism. See pp. 37f. on the sabotage operations in Egypt in 1954. Though Sharett was informed of the facts immediately after the sabotage ring was broken up by Egyptian police, when the trial of the saboteurs took place he denounced "the plot . . . and the show trial . . . against a group of Jews . . . victims of false accusations," and his party's paper (Davar, Labor Party), accused the Egyptian government of "a Nazi-inspired policy." Privately, Sharett was much distressed; he described Defense Minister Lavon, whom he apparently regarded as bearing responsibility for this affair, in these terms, to the secretary-general of the Labor Party: "He inspired and nurtured the unworthy adventuristic army and preached the lesson that not the Arab countries but the Western Powers are the enemy, and the only way to deter them from their conspiracies is by a direct action that will terrorize them."

It was carried out by the Israel Border Police (Magav) and resulted in 48 Arab civilians dead, including 6 women and 23 children aged 8–17. Arab sources usually give the death toll as 49, as they include the unborn child of one of the women.

The border policemen who were involved in the shooting were brought to trial and found guilty and sentenced to prison terms, but all received pardons and were released in a year. The brigade commander was sentenced to pay the symbolic fine of 10 prutot (old Israeli cents). The Israeli court found that the command to kill civilians was “blatantly illegal”.

Israel agreed that Egypt had "expressed its willingness to enter into a peace agreement with Israel" -- in fact, on better terms for Israel than in Sadat's subsequent trip to Jerusalem in November 1977, which was regarded as such a dramatic breakthrough since there was no mention of Palestinian self-determination, which Israel now claims to be the main stumbling block barring a settlement. On Israel's unwillingness to accept Sadat's 1971 offer, see the comments by General Haim Bar-Lev, a cabinet member in the Meir and Rabin governments, in the Labor Party journal Ot, March 9, 1972: "I think that we could obtain a peace settlement on the basis of the earlier [pre-June 1967] borders. If I were persuaded that this is the maximum that we might obtain, I would say: agreed. But I think that it is not the maximum. I think that if we continue to hold out, we will obtain more." It is intriguing to see how American commentators committed to Israeli power and the denial of Palestinian national rights deal with these annoying facts. According to Theodore Draper, for example, Sadat's 1977 "program called for peace on the most extreme Arab terms, except for those Arab extremists who would be satisfied with nothing but the total destruction of the state of Israel" -- we are presumably to understand that Sadat's program called for the partial destruction of Israel. Draper continues:

For Israel, the dilemma was excruciating. Why and how Israel came to be in the Sinai, Gaza and the West Bank are too often forgotten or ignored. They had been occupied as the result of a war openly instigated by Egypt, Syria and Jordan with the outright, boisterously proclaimed aim of doing away with the very existence of Israel. Even Mr. Sadat admittedly did not accept its existence until he decided to come to Jerusalem. Never having contemplated a victory on the scale of 1967, the Israelis did not know what to do with it and first thought of trading occupied territories for a peace treaty. Nasser's Egypt could have had Mr. Sadat s Jerusalem peace plan for the asking in the summer of 1967.

(Review of Ezer Weizman, The Battle for Peace [New York: Bantam, 1981]; N. Y. Times Book Review, May 17, 1981.)

Let us put aside this rather simple-minded version of the events of 1967 and the claim, for which Draper presents no particle of evidence, that Israel would have agreed to total withdrawal to the pre-June 1967 borders in 1967 (Sadat's "extremist program" of 1977, according to Draper). What is more interesting is Draper's claim that Sadat "admittedly" did not accept the existence of Israel prior to November 1977, and his complete silence concerning the plain fact, typically "forgotten or ignored," that more than six years earlier Sadat had offered Israel terms more favorable to it than those of 1977 while clearly and explicitly "accepting] its existence," only to meet with a complete rebuff on the part of Israel and the United States.

Israel invades Lebanon

"The Israeli invasion of Lebanon in the summer of 1982 divided the Israeli public -- and Jewish communities abroad -- as have few other events in recent years. Many Israelis were shocked by the destruction wrought on Lebanon and the suffering of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples at the hands of the Israeli military machine. It was evident from the start that the invasion had not been prompted by any imminent threat to Israel’s security. As the war dragged on, as besieged Beirut was ruthlessly and systematically devastated, it became increasingly difficult for Jews, in Israel and elsewhere, to remain silent. Opposition to the war took the form of massive demonstrations, vigils, petitions and anti-war advertisements, and dissidence surfaced even within the Israeli army. The national consensus which had hitherto characterized Israeli politics concerning security issues evaporated. In its place emerged a highly polarized, tense and potentially explosive political situation."

Operation Mole Cricket 19

"Operation Mole Cricket 19 was a suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) campaign launched by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) against Syrian targets on June 9, 1982, at the outset of the 1982 Lebanon War. The operation was the first time in history that a Western air force successfully destroyed a Soviet-built surface-to-air missile (SAM) network. It also became one of the biggest air battles since World War II, and the biggest since the Korean War. The result was a decisive Israeli victory, leading to the colloquial name the Bekaa Valley Turkey Shoot."

The Israeli Air Force conducted 15 air strikes in Gaza supposedly directed at Hamas targets in response to a rocket attack from Palestinian militants.  The subsequent bombardment of Gaza during July cut short the unified government’s efforts to take serious steps forward to solidify the unity agreement.

Negotiating a ceasefire agreement was not planned to be the first act of the unity government, but Israel successfully disrupted any planned unification of the Palestinian political system by imposing the latest humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Instead of beginning organizational tasks such as reunifying ministries, integrating Gaza’s security personnel into the national security institutions, merging two legal systems, and holding national elections, the “unity government” effort morphed into a “unity delegation” to deal with the ceasefire. There is a huge difference between a unity government based on a unified political system and a “unified delegation” focused solely on saving what remains of the Gaza Strip.
